Is Leather Sustainable?
July 2021
The question on many people’s lips is, is leather sustainable? A topic brought up at least once a month by the Business of Fashion.
Many question the sustainability of leather, but as leather is a natural material and readily available, we join the debate and argue that there isn't a more sustainable material out there. Real leather, when compared to plastic or leather alternatives, has certain sustainability advantages. Here are some reasons why real leather should be considered more sustainable:
- Durability: Real leather products are known for their durability and longevity. High-quality leather items can last for many years, sometimes even decades, with proper care. This durability reduces the need for frequent replacements, resulting in less waste.
- Biodegradability: Real leather is a natural material derived from animal hides. Unlike synthetic materials like plastic, which can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, leather is biodegradable. When leather products reach the end of their life cycle, they can decompose naturally without leaving behind harmful microplastics or polluting the environment.
- Renewable Resource: Leather is derived from the hides of animals, which are a by-product of the meat industry. Utilising the hides ensures that more parts of the animal are used, reducing waste. The production of leather contributes to the economic viability of the meat industry and promotes a more sustainable use of resources.
- Quality and Craftsmanship: Traditional leather production often involves skilled craftsmen who employ traditional techniques and handwork to transform raw hides into finished products. This craftsmanship often results in higher quality and long-lasting goods, further extending the product's lifespan.
At CLG we use the finest full-grain cowhide leather. When looked after leather can last for generations and grow a beautiful patina over time and use.
To this day, no synthetic or imitation leather comes close to real leather in tests for durability and quality, and until it does we will continue to work with this beautiful, sustainable and long lasting material.
